Alex Smith

Alex leads the Australian division of Winchester Search. He has nearly ten years of experience working on behalf of global law firms, corporations and patent & trade mark firms, and has placed partners, General Counsel and senior lawyers into leadership roles across the Asia Pacific region.

His clients range from international law firms, US Fortune 50 corporations, ASX-top 10 companies and top-tier patent attorney firms, through to boutique Australian practices offering specialised services. Alex has recruited extensively into the patent & trade mark profession, and his objective is to be the preferred recruiter in this field in the Asia Pacific region.

Alex’s focus is ‘research led’ recruitment, combining Winchester Search’s research capability with his market knowledge and network of contacts to ensure his clients secure the best available candidate. In addition to traditional research-driven executive search services, Alex can provide market mapping and competitor intelligence services – providing insights into his client’s external business environment, enabling risks and opportunities to be identified early, and supporting strategic decision making.

Prior to establishing Winchester Search in Australia, Alex was a Principal of Carmichael Fisher – an international executive search firm with a global reach. Alex led Carmichael Fisher’s legal recruitment team in Melbourne, where he managed search assignments for a variety of large companies, top-tier law firms and national patent and trade mark practices.

Alex graduated with honours in law from the University of Exeter in the UK before undertaking Masters' level studies in the USA and UK. He then practised as a barrister in London with a leading set of Chambers before relocating to Melbourne where he qualified and practised as a solicitor.
